Generating vs. Searching

AI generates content — it doesn't search the web (unless explicitly enabled).

Key distinction:
- Generating: Creating output from learned patterns
- Searching: Looking up current information online

What this means:
- AI knowledge has a cutoff date
- It can't check current stock prices (unless given tools)
- Generated "facts" may be outdated or wrong
- Real-time data requires explicit web access

When web access is available:
- ChatGPT Browse mode
- Gemini (default)
- Perplexity AI
- Copilot in Bing

Always ask: "When was this information current?" if recency matters.
